Canvassing 101: A Guide for Volunteers

Welcome Aboard!

Your decision to volunteer and canvass with the Middleton Democrats is a powerful contribution to our democratic process. Canvassing is a grassroots method that allows us to connect directly with voters in our neighborhoods, hear their concerns, and share our candidate’s vision for a better community. This guide will equip you with the tools and knowledge to make a meaningful impact while canvassing.

What is Canvassing?

Canvassing involves going door-to-door in neighborhoods to engage with voters personally. It's about having meaningful conversations, listening to people's perspectives, and discussing why your candidate is the best choice. This direct interaction is incredibly valuable as it helps us build relationships, gain trust, and encourage voter turnout on election day. Door to door canvassing is an incremental process. Out of 40 doors knocked you may only speak to a few voters but research has proven that, over time, these few doors add up to the small percentage differences that can change an election outcome for Wisconsin and the nation.

Key Goals of Canvassing

1. Identifying Support: Determine who supports your candidate or is undecided.

2. Persuasion: Convince undecided voters by discussing your candidate’s platform and values.

3. Voter Information: Ensure supporters know where and when to vote.

Tips for Effective Canvassing

1. Be Respectful and Approachable: Always greet residents with a smile and respect their time.

2. Introduce Yourself as a Volunteer: "Hello, I'm Jane and I'm a volunteer with the Middleton Democrats."

3. Know Your Candidate: Be familiar with your candidate’s platform, key policies, and accomplishments.

4. Listen Actively: Engage in active listening to understand concerns and tailor your responses.

5. Stay Positive: Remain upbeat and focus on the positive aspects of your candidate’s vision.

Practical Steps

1. Preparation: Dress comfortably, wear your volunteer badge, and carry campaign materials.

2. Script and Materials: Familiarize yourself with the canvassing script and any literature provided.

3. Pairing Up: If possible, bring a partner & go canvassing in pairs for safety and support.

4. Data Collection: Use MiniVan (see below) or paper forms to input data after each interaction.

MiniVan Resources

MiniVan is an important tool in effective and efficient canvassing. We encourage all of our volunteers to download and use this mobile app while canvassing. It gives you important real time information about the voters you will be talking with and it inputs the data you collect directly into the system without someone having to read and manually enter paper turfs.

Please take advantage of the links below to download and familiarize yourself with MiniVan before your canvassing shift.

If for some reason you cannot use MiniVan, paper walk sheets will be available if needed.
